Building a tournament list

Image
So, in this article, I'm going to be explaining my process of writing and preparing a list for a competitive event and hopefully share some useful tips to help you with your tournament preparation. Lets start with your faction choice. The first thing you are going to do of course is decide on the army/armies you will be using. Whether your decision of faction is based on the armies you like or the set of best rules is up to you. List Writing: Now we get to the list writing portion of this guide. When it comes to writing a list, the first thing I actually do is pick 4-5 secondaries. This may sound strange at first but here is the reason, you need to be able to reliably score secondaries alongside primary to win games. It's that simple, so I choose a set of secondaries and then build a list around those. For example here is my current list: .Fluxmaster: warlord:Fractal Mind, Gaze of Fate and Infernal Flames .Fateskimmer: Horrors, Bolt of Change and Infernal Gateway  .Tranceweaver...

Be'lakor! Tips and tricks for using the Dark Master!

Image
Today I am going to be talking about the Dark Master himself and some of the best ways to run him. When I started the hobby 15 years ago, Be'lakors old model is what drew me to Daemons (even though you couldn't use him in 40k). I have a big soft spot for Belly and I am going to share my tactics and combos you can use to really get the most out of him. His Stats: Let's start with his stats line, 12" move with fly is great for a big monster. It means he is harder to move block and you don't have to worry about terrain features. He's -1 to hit with no re-rolls and -1 to wound at T7 which makes him quite tanky, pair that with his -1 damage at range and his 4+ Daemon save and you a have a monster that can just tank anything your opponent throws at him. You can also get him to T8 with Boon of Change from a Tzeentcher psyker if you manage to get the toughness buff, making melta wound him on a 5 is so good!!   Stratagems: Since Be'lakor has all four god keywords, h...

The warp storm rages on!

Image
When armies started getting their mono faction abilities like chapter tactics/command protocols/contagions etc.... I prayed for the return of the warpstorm. I did want something similar to the old warpstorm table where you rolled 2d6 and you could get effects like a free troop unit summoned, +1 invul saves for Daemons etc... Though the lower you rolled you would suffer negative effects like -1 to Daemon invuls. I wanted them to essentially do a table that didn't need rolls but started off with one effect and progressed over the turns to represent the Warp breaking more into reality. Instead they kept the "random" element for Chaos and essentially gave us 8 rolls to get special command points to spend on "special command points". In this article I'm just gonna go over the new Warp Storm abilities and which are good, which are bad and some of the best uses for them. Undivided: Mutated Invigoration 5 points: Probably the best (and most expensive) of the abiliti...

Lets talk heralds!

Image
So with the release of the new Chaos Daemon Codex back in September, alot of the focus was on all of the big boys. But I want to bring attention to the humble herald and all their variations.  In this article I'm gonna just go over all the heralds and what I think of them along with some tips and tricks you can play while using them. I'll just start by saying heralds now have a re-roll 1's to wound aura for same god core units which is amazing!! Tzeentch: Fateskimmer: Probably the most popular of the heralds right now, this guy sits on a burning chariot throwing magic at your opponents while slashing units with his two screamers. 14" move, T6, 9 wounds with that magic 3+ save at range and a 5+ save in combat. For 5pts you can give him a set of blue Horrors for +1 to cast which is mandatory, and for another 5pts you get 3 str7 ap-4 2 damage shots which isn't too shabby. Overall this guy is solid and a pretty awesome model. I'll never understand how they can cal...

My GT winning list

Image
This past weekend I attended the Saffron Slam based in Saffron Walden in Essex, a two day GT ran by Elmo Miniatures. Once again Lewis put on a great event with beautiful looking tables and a great atmosphere. This won't be a full game report post, as I don't want to do paragraphs and paragraphs on games. This will instead be a run down on my list, how it worked and certain points in games. My list: Undivided Battalion Detachment  HQ: Fateskimmer: Warlord: Fractal Mind, Retinue of Horrors, Bolt of Change, Infernal Flames 145pts Tranceweaver: Hysterical Frenzy 70pts Troops: 10 Daemonettes 120pts  10 Daemonettes 120pts  10 Daemonettes 120pts  10 Daemonettes 120pts  10 Daemonettes 120pts  Elites: 5 Flamers 125pts  5 Flamers 125pts 5 Flamers 125pts  Khorne Patrol Detachment  HQ: Be'lakor: Pall of Despair, Shrouded Step  Troops: 10 Bloodletters 130pts  10 Bloodletters 130pts  10 Bloodletters 130pts  I've now played a three and t...

Chaos Daemon point changes

Image
So the Chaos Daemon codex has been out now for close to two months already, and I think it's fair to say we are in far better state than we were pre-release. The new codex is strong and while lacking as much flavour as it once had, I think the biggest issue it has is point costs. With GW compensating for our new untouchable Daemon save by slightly overcosting a few units. So today I just want to put foward my suggestions on some additional positive changes for when GW inevitably hike up the points of certain flamey Bois. Flamers: old-25pts new-35pts Let's start with the obvious one, Flamers are very cleary undercosted and while being the only unit who is, they definitely heavily prop up the majority of Daemon lists and now see themselves in alot of CSM, Tsons and Knight lists too. 3 wounds at T4 with a 3+ save vs range, and d6+3 auto hitting shots that are buffable multiple ways is just too good for 25pts per model. They don't need to be ripped to shreds with an overreactio...

Welcome!

Image
I started the True Daemon Lord about a year ago now as a way to document my hobby and my progress in the competitive tournament scene. After taking a 6 month break from the hobby and getting straight back into events over the last few months, I've decided to really focus on my online presence and born is this blog through that. I will be post many types of posts here, from reviews and talking tactics about Chaos (especially Daemons!) to reviewing recent events I've been too and the lists I'm currently playing. So stay tuned as I progress on this journey!!
